Drama in the EFL clasroom
One of the most potential genres of literature to use for helping ESL/EFL learners learn effectively is drama. Dramas are very suitable to use because the components of drama (actions, dialogues, and nonverbal languages) facilitate the students to actively participate in the language learning process.
Through drama, students can practice all language skills so that they learn to communicate in a contextualized way. Ozdemir and Çakmak (2008) posited that drama facilitates students of every level of education, advance their intellectual skills such as creativity, problem-solving, communication, socialization, and empathy; and it provides individuals the chance for self-actualization, teamwork, and sharing their responsibilities.
Benefits of Drama:
Acquisition of meaningful, fluent interaction in the target language.
Pronunciation and prosody in a contextualized and interactional fashion.
Acquisition of new vocabulary and structure.
Develop the students’ imagination.
Self-confidence.
Critical and creative thinking.
Develop skills cooperation, social awareness, and understanding.
A healthy release of emotion.
